The Fourth Sunday of Advent: A Season of Love
Bringhurst Community Church
As we arrive at the Fourth Sunday of Advent, our hearts turn to the theme of Love—the greatest and most defining characteristic of God’s relationship with us. Advent has invited us to reflect on Hope, Peace, Joy, and now we conclude the season by focusing on the Love that came down from heaven in the form of a child: Jesus Christ.
Love That Came Near
The Christmas story is, at its core, a love story—God’s love reaching into a broken world to bring salvation, healing, and redemption.
Scripture reminds us:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”— John 3:16 (NIV)
This is not distant, abstract love. It is love given, love demonstrated, love made flesh in the person of Jesus.
The Humble Arrival of Love
The love of God entered the world quietly, humbly, in a manger in Bethlehem. Even before His birth, God was working through Mary—a young woman of remarkable faith and obedience.
Mary responded to God’s call with a heart full of surrender:
“I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled.”— Luke 1:38 (NIV)
Her willingness reminds us that God often works through ordinary people to reveal extraordinary love.
Perfect Love That Casts Out Fear
As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, we are reminded that God’s love is not fragile or conditional—it is powerful, steady, and life changing.
The apostle John wrote:
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear.”— 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
In a world filled with uncertainty, God’s love offers reassurance. In seasons of worry, His love brings comfort. In moments of doubt, His love remains constant.
Sharing Christ’s Love
The fourth candle of Advent challenges us to not only receive God’s love but also reflect it to others. This week, consider:
How can you show love to someone who feels overlooked?
Where might God be inviting you to respond with grace, patience, or forgiveness?
Who in your life needs to hear that they matter to God?
Love is most powerful when it is lived out.
