Throughout Scripture, we are reminded of God’s heart for the poor and the needy. As followers of Christ, we are called to extend love, kindness, and practical help to those who are struggling. Serving the homeless is more than an act of charity—it is an expression of God’s love in action.
Biblical Foundation for Serving Others
One of the most well-known passages about serving those in need comes from
Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV):
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
Jesus makes it clear that when we serve those in need, we are serving Him. Our actions are a direct reflection of our faith and obedience to His command to love one another.
Ways to Serve the Homeless
Providing Meals – One of the simplest ways to serve is by feeding the hungry. Whether it’s volunteering at a shelter, donating food, or preparing meals, this act of kindness meets an immediate need.
Donating Essential Items – Many shelters and missions rely on donations of clothing, hygiene products, and other essentials. Consider donating coats, socks, blankets, and toiletries.
Offering Encouragement – A kind word, a conversation, or simply listening can make a significant impact on someone who feels forgotten or alone.
Praying for Those in Need – Never underestimate the power of prayer. Pray for provision, protection, and transformation in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
Join Us in Serving
At Bringhurst Community Church, we are honored to partner with Kokomo Rescue Mission for a special meal service on April 12th. We are also hosting a condiment drive, collecting essential items like ketchup, mustard, and salad dressings to support their ministry. We invite you to be a part of this mission by donating or volunteering.
As Proverbs 19:17 (NIV) reminds us:“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.”
Let’s come together and be the hands and feet of Jesus, serving with love and compassion.
