Happy New Year from Bringhurst Community Church! As we enter 2024, we are filled with anticipation and faith, knowing that our hope is not bound by the changing of calendars, but by the unchanging promises of God. This year, as we step into the unknown, we do so with confidence, not in our own strength, but in the power and presence of the One who holds our future.
A Time for New Beginnings
The start of a new year always feels like a fresh start. The turning of the calendar invites us to reflect, make resolutions, and set new goals. It’s a time to leave behind what has passed and press forward into the possibilities that lie ahead. But as believers, we know
that true newness doesn’t come from simply turning a page on the calendar. It comes from the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
In 2 Corinthians 5:17, the apostle Paul reminds us:
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)
No matter the trials or triumphs of the past year, in Christ, we are made new. Our identity is no longer defined by our circumstances, mistakes, or even our achievements. We are defined by who we are in Jesus—forgiven, redeemed, and made whole. This truth is what gives us hope as we face the future. As the old year fades, we can step forward with confidence because Jesus has made all things new.
A Year to Look Forward with Hope
The beauty of the new year is that it holds promise—a promise of fresh starts, new opportunities, and the chance to grow deeper in faith. But while many may look forward with anxiety, uncertainty, or fear of what lies ahead, we, as followers of Christ, can look forward with hope. Hope is not just an emotion; it’s a firm confidence in God’s faithfulness, regardless of the circumstances.
Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, urges us to focus on the future, not the past:
"Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14, NIV)
This is a powerful reminder that our faith is forward-looking. We are called to forget what lies behind—not in the sense of ignoring or minimizing the past, but in the sense of not letting it define us or hold us back. We are pressing forward toward a goal—a goal set by God, and that goal is ultimately to become more like Christ. This year, as we move ahead, we are invited to pursue God’s calling for our lives with all our hearts, with all our strength, and with the confidence that He is guiding us every step of the way.
Hope in Jesus: Our Unshakable Foundation
As we look forward to the year ahead, it’s important to remember that our hope is not in the year itself, or in our ability to control what happens. Our hope is in Jesus. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). He is the firm foundation on which we stand, and He is the one who holds our future.
In Romans 15:13, Paul offers a beautiful blessing for the new year:
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." (Romans 15:13, NIV)
As we trust in God, He fills us with joy, peace, and hope—not because of our circumstances, but because of His presence in our lives. Our hope is not wishful thinking; it’s the confidence that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). And as we trust in Him, we are filled with a hope that overflows—one that not only sustains us but also touches those around us.
This hope is not bound by time. It’s a hope that transcends the limits of the new year. It’s a hope that reminds us that our best days are ahead, not because of our own plans, but because of God's promises. Jesus offers us the hope of eternal life, the assurance that no matter what this year holds, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Pressing On Toward the Goal
As we look forward to the new year, it’s important to remember that our Christian journey is a race, and it’s one that requires perseverance. In Hebrews 12:1-2, we are encouraged:
"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." (Hebrews 12:1-2, NIV)
The start of a new year is a great reminder to lay aside anything that would weigh us down—old habits, past failures, and fears—and to fix our eyes on Jesus, the one who is both the beginning and the end of our faith. He is the goal, and He is the one who enables us to run the race with perseverance. Whatever this year brings, let us stay focused on Him, knowing that He is faithful to complete the work He has begun in us (Philippians 1:6).
A Year to Live with Purpose
This year is a fresh opportunity to live with purpose. As we begin 2024, let us commit to living out our calling in Christ. Whether it’s in our families, our workplaces, or our communities, we are called to be light in a dark world (Matthew 5:14-16). Let us seize every opportunity to share the hope of Jesus with those around us, knowing that our purpose is to bring glory to God and to make His name known.
Conclusion: Embrace the New Year with Confidence
The new year is full of promise, not because of what it holds, but because of the One who holds it. In Jesus, we have a hope that never fades, a purpose that transcends our circumstances, and a future that is secure. So, as we step into this new year, let’s do so with faith, joy, and expectancy.
May 2024 be a year where we press on toward the goals God has set before us. May we experience His peace and joy in abundance, and may our lives overflow with hope as we continue to trust in Him.
Happy New Year! Let’s embrace all that God has in store, knowing that the best is yet to come in His name.
