The Third Sunday of Advent: A Season of Joy
Bringhurst Community Church
As we move deeper into the Advent season, we come to the Third Sunday of Advent, traditionally known as Joy Sunday. This week, the candle we light is often called the Shepherd’s Candle, symbolizing the joy that broke into the world when Jesus was born.
Joy That Breaks Through the Darkness
The joy we celebrate during Advent is not the fleeting kind that comes and goes with circumstances. It is a deep, soul-rooted joy that comes from knowing that God is with us, and that His promises never fail.
When the angel appeared to the shepherds, he declared:
“Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”— Luke 2:10 (NIV)
This joy was not just for those shepherds on a hillside long ago—It is for us today. It is for all people. It is for you.
Finding Joy in Every Season
Advent reminds us that joy is more than a feeling—it’s a response to the truth of who God is and what He has done. Even in seasons of difficulty, grief, or uncertainty, the joy of Christ can steady our hearts.
The apostle Paul wrote:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”— Philippians 4:4 (NIV)
Our joy is anchored in the Lord—Not in our schedules, our challenges, or the busyness of December.
Sharing Joy With Others
As we light the third candle of Advent, we’re reminded that joy is meant to be shared. This week, consider:
Who in your life needs encouragement?
Where can you spread joy through kindness or generosity?
How can you reflect the joy of Christ to someone who feels forgotten?
The world is full of burdens—but followers of Jesus carry the good news that joy has come.
