As we come together to celebrate this season, we are filled with joy and gratitude for the incredible gift that Christmas represents: the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This is not just a holiday, but a sacred moment that changed the world forever. At Bringhurst Community Church, we want to take this opportunity to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas and what makes this day so incredibly special.
A Day of Good News
In Luke 2:10-11, the angel of the Lord brings a message to the shepherds, declaring:
"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.'" (Luke 2:10-11, NIV)
This verse encapsulates the essence of Christmas—the good news that the Savior of the world has been born! A Savior, the Messiah, has arrived to fulfill the promises made by God long ago. For centuries, God’s people had waited in anticipation, longing for the coming of the Messiah, the one who would bring salvation and set them free. And now, that day has come.
This day is special because it marks the moment when God stepped into human history, not as a conqueror or a king in a palace, but as a humble child born in a manger. Jesus’ birth was not just a historical event—it was the beginning of God's greatest act of love for humanity.
The Fulfillment of Prophecy
The birth of Jesus also fulfilled many prophecies from the Old Testament, confirming God's faithfulness to His promises. In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet foretold the coming of a child who would be a source of hope for all people:
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6, NIV)
This verse gives us a glimpse of the divine nature of Jesus and the kind of ruler He would be—one who brings peace, wisdom, and eternal life. His kingdom is not of this world, but it reigns in the hearts of those who believe in Him. This is the Prince of Peace we celebrate today!
The Reason for the Season: God's Love
At the heart of Christmas lies the profound truth of God’s love. John 3:16 reminds us why God sent His Son into the world:
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16, NIV)
Christmas is the ultimate expression of God’s love for humanity. He sent Jesus not because we deserved it, but because of His immense love for each of us. Jesus came to bridge the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. His birth in Bethlehem was the first step in God’s redemptive plan to restore the relationship between God and His creation.
A Celebration of Joy and Peace
As we gather with family and friends this Christmas, we are reminded that this is a time for joy, peace, and celebration. In Matthew 2:10, when the wise men saw the star, they were filled with joy:
"When they saw the star, they were overjoyed." (Matthew 2:10, NIV)
Their joy was not just from the sight of a star, but from the realization that the long-awaited King had been born. Their joy is our joy. Jesus, the Savior of the world, has come to bring peace to our hearts, restore our hope, and fill our lives with His presence.
In a world that often seems chaotic and uncertain, the message of Christmas is one of peace.
Jesus Himself is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), and through His birth, death, and resurrection, He offers us peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). This peace is not just the absence of conflict, but the presence of God in our lives, guiding us, comforting us, and offering us hope for the future.
Living Out the Christmas Message
As we celebrate this Christmas, let us remember that the message of Christmas is not just for one day of the year—it is for every day of our lives. The love, joy, and peace we experience in Christ are meant to be shared with others. In John 13:34-35, Jesus commands us to love one another as He has loved us:
"A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35, NIV)
This Christmas, let us reflect the love of Christ in all that we do. Whether through kind words, generous actions, or a spirit of hospitality, we are called to be a light to those around us, just as Jesus is the Light of the World (John 8:12).
A Time for Gratitude and Worship
At Bringhurst Community Church, we are filled with gratitude for the gift of Jesus Christ. As we gather in worship this Christmas, we lift our voices in praise, acknowledging the greatness of God’s love and the wonder of His Son’s birth. In Luke 2:14, the angels proclaim:
"Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." (Luke 2:14, NIV)
This is the reason we celebrate Christmas: to give glory to God for the gift of His Son, who has brought peace to a broken world and offers us eternal life. May we all experience the joy of knowing Jesus and sharing His love with others this Christmas season.
Merry Christmas from Bringhurst Community Church
As we celebrate today, let us be reminded of the true meaning of Christmas. It is not about presents, decorations, or even festive meals, but about the gift of Jesus Christ. This day marks the fulfillment of God's promise to send a Savior, and it is a day to rejoice and give thanks for His love, grace, and mercy.
On behalf of everyone at Bringhurst Community Church, we wish you a very Merry Christmas! May your hearts be filled with the peace, joy, and hope that comes from knowing Jesus. Let us continue to celebrate and share the good news that a Savior has been born for all people, and His love will never fail.
